New Coffeehouse Owner, New Barista, Chump?

Im both a new barista and a new coffeehouse owner. I attended the American Barista & Coffee School 3 yrs ago and absolutely fell in love with the industry. I'm proud to have learned from some of the best. I opened my own coffeehouse 7 months ago in Atlanta. I've attended trade shows subscribe to all the magazines, and visit all the coffeehouses.

Im currently practicing my latte art (almost got my rosettas down!) and my tamp is perfect maybe 80% of the time! lol

I work real hard sometimes to the point of overwhelming and overextending myself to one day be among the best.

I want to learn more about competitions and the differences in how the beans are grown and harvested and become a professional "cupper". I want to do it all ! lol

Before I'm able to hire an employee, I need to learn how to prevent waste and how to train someone else to pull the perfect shot and help them foster a love for the industry.

I guess I just sometimes feel a bit intimidated because there's things that seem so common knowledge to others that I still don't know about. Yet, here I am with my own shop. *Shrugs This is where the chump part comes in ! lol

I'm so into it even my regular customers are excited, see my enthusiasm and gave me the nickname "Java The Hunny" lol. I guess if they're confident enough in my ability to have me deemed a coffee-related nickname. I should have enough confidence in myself eh ?

Wow! You're so cool. The only difference between you and me right now is that I'm two years in to it, I've never been to a trade show (since I'm out in the pacific) and I've been in the industry for quite a while. But hey, I always tell myself that I'm young and stupid and this is the right time to take risks. The only thing I learned in grad school was to "just act like you know what you're doing", and now, having never used my education, I've owned a little indie coffee shop for two years. Who knew? You're doing great.

I admire you. I'm almost in the same situation as you, I'll be opening a shop soon, and I'm also very new at all this, but I've been so eager to learn everything! my partner works at Starbucks, and I'm nurse! I've also gone to shows, subscribed to a bunch of magazines and went to the SBA in Seattle just a few months ago!

GOOD LUCK!

Wonderful comments everyone ! Thanks so much ! It's True Troy that's what I definitely do ! I LIVE by the "act as if.." principle. Whenever I was nervous about an interview or going to a party where I don't know anyone or just new surroundings period, I've always acted as if I was cool as a cucumber lol eventually u become it !

I think that's why I find it funny when my customers have debates on coffee, they come to me for the definitive answer. Im so flattered by that. It's cool that they figure I know everything coffee. Maybe Im pretty close.

Who else to tell how nervous I really am to but my industry folks ? :-)

Thanks so much guys my back is way straighter today than it was when I typed the blog entry. No slouchin' !

Hey Loren, everyone has to start somewhere, you seem to have built a strong base with training and education. I coached college volleyball for 15 years, and there's a coaching technique that might be helpful, it's called "Act as if...: The basic premise is if you practice with confidence ("acting as if you knew") while observing talented baristas either live or from video, your body will follow that lead. Take it for what it's worth, it's just something I employed over the years, just never stop seeking out educational opportunities!

Loren, if you ever have a list of questions as well you can call any of us at ABC's. I think back on my many years in this industry, and it is amazing how much even one year can make. You have the enthusiasm, and it is important to dedicate yourself to constantly learning more and more each day. Attending jams, competitions and tradeshows is a great place to start. Take care!
