hey everyone. I thought it would be fun to start a thread where we can all list bands and CD's that are great for coffee bar atmosphere's. I'll start with a few favorites:
Sam Prekop - Who's Your New Professor
Wilco - Sky Blue Sky
Peter Bjorn & John - Writers Block
The Shins - Wincing the Night Away
Tonight a dead closing shift turned into a Justin Timberlake party. When a regular from the theatre down the street came in 10mins before close I had to awkwardly smile and tell him that I was not embarassed...to be fair, he was wearing a white crushed velvet pearl snap shirt.
Usually however a few of my favorites are:
Classic Sinatra
Dispatch
Death Cab can be good depending on the time/feel of the day
Copeland as many others said
and the soundtracks to Amélie and Stranger Than Fiction.
i agree with the ones who have said that classics by ratatat is a definite must. that’s probably the record that i’ve played where the most customers have come up to me and asked me for the name of the band and album. other records that gets me through the day are these:
opening:
vampire weekend – vampire weekend
loney dear – loney noir
kimya dawson – remember that i love you
the juno-soundtrack
various artists – the very best of ethiopiques (feels good to serve ethiopian coffee with ethiopian music playing in the background)
around noon:
mgmt – oracular spectacular
various kitchy italian ballads from the 50’s - 80’s
arcade fire – neon bible
the whitest boy alive – dreams
cold war kids – robbers & cowards
afternoon/closing:
love is all – nine times that same song
the moldy peaches – the moldy peaches
michael jackson - thriller
the black lips – los valientes del mondo nuevo
lupe fiasco – food & liquor
While I have very fond memories of cranking Dr. Dre's "Nuttin' But A G Thang" at 6am service back at the old Hines Public Market Coffee, I've come to prefer The Sound of Silence in a cafe environment.
Pedro the Lion- anything by him, really
Rocky Votolato- anything
Phoenix- Its Never Been Like That
Coconut Records- Nighttiming
Sondre Lerche- Phantom Punch (its a good night time/busy album)
Faces Down (good chill music)
Nat King Cole- all of it
Mates of State- it really depends on the mood
Bright Eyes- oh, man
Coldplay- the new album is soooo good to me
The Honorary Title- both of their full lengths
John Vanderslice- Emerald City
I might be beating this into the ground now but...
Hard to believe no one has mentioned elliot smith yet
Josh Rouse
Josh Radlin
Alexi Murdoch
Some Ryan Adams is okay every now and again, easy to get tired of though
Damien Rice
Luke Temple
Peter Krebs
Iron & Wine
The shop I work at plays Sirius's coffeehouse station- decent, but it beats things into the ground. nice to spice things up once in a while(like when the owners are out of town... ;) )
Jason Collett-Here's to Being Here.
Broken Social Scene-Feel Good Lost
Modest Mouse-the moon & antarctica
Josh Ridder-The Historical Conquests of Josh Ridder
Anything by Neil Young, David Bowie, The Beatles
and the Coffee and Cigarettes soundtrack
Doolittle - The Pixies
Cherub Rock - Smashing Pumpkins
The Juno Soundtrack - Various
Thunder, Lightning, Strike - The Go! Team
The Cure's Greatest Hits - The Cure.
Awesome, awesome albums. We play them at work, but we do work in a kiosk in a train station...maybe not the best for a coffee shop lol
