All About Me

Just like it should be. Who am I? What am I?

My name is James Spano. Born and raised in Auburn, Al I also attended school there and graduated Spring '06 with a degree in music education. I got interested in coffee around my second sophomore year. I don't mean my second year of school, I mean my second year as a sophomore. I'm a slow learner. Anyway, some friends of mine from church who recently moved here from Ecuador had just opened a coffee shop and I went over with some friends to try… Continue

Grateful for the opportunity

I would like to thank Matt and the folks at the ABC School for starting the Barista Exchange networking site, but more importantly I would like to thank Matt for allowing "Enthusiast" such as myself to participate in a real and meaningful way.

I know some of the professionals out there probably think that the site potentially could be "hijacked," for a lack of better words, by the enthusiast. With sites like the Barista Guild or… Continue

some semblance of organization

So I'm working at this little organic cafe as the assistant manager, when the cafe manager decides to talk about starting up an espresso bar with some untouched equipment sitting at another one of the stores. The cafe manager left a few weeks ago, and as the asst. I jumped in to try and take over the project, which thus far has little in the way of any organization that I'm aware of beyond the construction. So I've been researching, pricing out items, finding all of the items that we're going… Continue

The Beauty of Christmas

So there I was on Christmas night...an avid Dallas cowboys fan, forced to drink Folger's coffee out of a Philadelphia Eagles mug at my brother-in-laws...the things we do for peace on Christmas.

Sorry, Kids, No Cupping Tomorrow But...

Posted by: Mary Dally-Muenzmaier

Since our all java knowing Roast Master Stephen is on a well deserved vacation, there will be NO cupping event at the Factory tomorrow. That being the case, our next and first of the New Year cupping will be held on Friday January 11 at the usual time, 9 sharp in the AM.

We know you're more than a little heartbroken by this news, and to be honest so are…

Point of Sale system

Folks,

I need to purchase a POS system in the next few months and I can use some advice. My former employer Intuit has a system that interfaces with QuickBooks however I am concerned that it may not support my coffee shop very well. I…

Mid-Atlantic/Northeast Barista Jam

Hey Everyone,

The Mid-Atlantic/Northeast Barista Jam is going on in lil' ol' Easton, PA March 5-7, 2008. Latte Art throwdowns, a 'Spro-down, money to go to Bikes to Rwanda, oh, and great educational sessions by the big names in coffee...it will be too much fun to miss!!!!!

Hot water tower

Anybody recommend a good-looking and good-working hot water tower or something for americanos? I'm currently using a small boiler plumbed into a tap on the counter but it doesn't hold enough volume. I need something plumbed-in that can almost boil and that can hold 4 litres (1 gallon) minimum. It has to be good-looking enough to be on the counter! At least as beautiful as thick, caramelly crema!

Thanks for your ideas.

New Music & Podcast Player Added

I have added a music player to the website which can be found in the bottom left column on the main page. If I am not mistaken, only administrators can upload music, but if you have something you would like to send, I can upload it for you. Podcasts are great, also any original material. I may put a few cool songs up but want to keep it mainly to stuff created by barista exchange members. You can email me a link to the mp3 file.

Feedback is appreciated.
