hey everyone. I thought it would be fun to start a thread where we can all list bands and CD's that are great for coffee bar atmosphere's. I'll start with a few favorites:

Sam Prekop - Who's Your New Professor
Wilco - Sky Blue Sky
Peter Bjorn & John - Writers Block
The Shins - Wincing the Night Away

- Matt

Sigur Ros fits great in my shop
I think we have at least one track from each of the albums mentioned so far, but I'm a little surprised by how exclusively contemporary these selections are. We play new stuff, but mix it up with lots of old blues, jazz, South American music, soul/funk music, etc. Our goal is to have music that appeals equally to the elderly and to young art students. So here are some other albums I'd like to toss in:

The Meters, Look-ka Py Py
Tom Ze, anything
Various, the Soul of Black Peru
Mississippi John Hurt, 1928 Sessions
Various, the Nuyorican Funk Experience (possibly the greatest compilation since Beleza Tropical)
The clash 24/7 until J throws me out.
oh, i do like architecture i helisinki...

i think ladytron is pretty much the perfect music, their new album is spectacular- and great for shops.

i also play alot of
new pornographers
tegan and sara
the winks
david bowie
she & him
bastard fairies
dresden dolls
bjork
the cardigans
crystal castles
elefant
the epoxies
erin mckeown
giant drag
goldfrapp
martina topley-bird
metric
pacebo
roisin murphy
the rosebuds
shiny toy guns
sia
squirrel nut zippers
theSTART
the vincent black shadow
and the yeah yeah yeahs
I should also add Matt Costa and Jack Johnson, but not his newest cd, Sleep Through The Static. That cd sucked. Eisley's music is great for coffeehouses. As far as Bjork, I like her, but other people either like her or hate her voice.
yeah,
certain music, like bjork definitely depends on the crowd at the shop, otherwise patrons just get annoyed...
Playing a mix over a full album helps keep things from getting too static in our shop.
yup i'm a big fan of beastie boys on repeat the whole day.
I can't believe that no one has mentioned

The Arcade Fire (mostly Funeral)

and

Blonde Redhead (preferably Misery is a Butterfly but they all work)

also depending on the atmosphere of the cafe, Raw Power by iggy and the stooges is the best album to play during a rush and Sonic Youth's Daydream Nation is a personal fav
Ravens & Chimes. Haven't been able to stop listening to their disk, Reichenbach Falls. They're being compared to a smaller membered version of the Arcade Fire. I disagree with the comparison, but maybe that'll spark your interest as it did mine.
2 dylan albums: desire and freewheelin
nightmares on wax
alton ellis
ethan daniel davidson
duke ellington
k'naan
rjd2
el-p
neil young - decades
sly and robbie
beres hammond
tricky
ok, enough, i could easily keep going, but a good mix is essential
Band of Horses - Everything all the time
Radiohead, any album
Elliott Smith
Handsome Furs - Plague Park
Caribou - Andorra
The National - Alligator
Electrelane - Power Out

And to clear out the Yuppies I throw on Justice - Cross
