I am appointing an employee into a supervisory position and am struggling as to what title to give the new lofty position. I have a small shop with 6 very close employees. I do not want the one whom I am promoting to feel uncomfortable with her title around her friends and peers. Supervisor sounds stuffy Manager sounds too all empowering… any suggestions?

How about "Assistant to the Regional Manager" just kidding ...

I think that Shift Lead, Lead Barista, Team Leader, etc. are all ok ...
Yeah, I like the Assistant to Regional Manager title. THat's funny, I'd take it!
Also, assistant to the dojo master works.... or at least it works for Dwight Shrute... Hah.. I think that it's okay to reeward someone who is responsible and trustworthy with a title like shift leader or lead barista... i have found that most of the people who get bent out of shape are the same people who aren't willing to work hard enough to earn that position... but i understand why you might want to avoid unnecessary trouble
Woo hoo ;_0 love this guy! I think he would enjoy the title of Captain... don't you? He would look great in an eye patch... haha
yes ... yes he would. :)

No matter what title you give this person, there will most likely be a testing from their peers. What's important is how this person handle the tests, and what kind of support you give. A true leader will be able to rise to the occasion.
It dosen't matter what you don't want this person to "feel" around their friends and peers in their new position. It does matter what this person may experience. Ask them if they forsee a problem and what can you do to support this person to be seccessful. You have to take yourself out of the picture except to train and develope your new "Assistant to the Owner" to get the results that you want. Hopefully you have laid out a job description and met with everyone to set this up. I would also ask your staff to support your person to be successful. If your newly appointed surpervisor wins, everyone wins!
Shift lead?
