I've been looking for a custom tamper.  Which one will work the best for me?  A quick Google search yields sites such as www.goodtamper.com with the Polecon tamper.  I want something "cool," something with some character.  Any suggestions?

You could always look at the 'Tamper Roadshow' thread at Home-Barisata.com. It was the result of a number of consumer home baristi that wanted to be able to answer the same question that you're asking, but didn't have a venue to examine all the tampers available near their home.
While the kit (which contained some dozen tamps or more) isn't circulating, and is lost and presumed stolen at last I heard, there are a number of different users reviewing each of the tampers in succession, and there are a bunch of differing viewpoints as well as highlights and lowlights.
It will at least give you a bit of perspective for what kinds of features you will find desirable, and which you will not.
I LOVE my tampers from Thor Tampers

Highly recommended and they hold up well to everyday use. I'm a bit of a basher, so I sent Les a coin and had him embed it at the top of the handle.
My offer to make someone a tamper still stands. Pick a wood and tell me how you think it should be shaped and Ill make it for you.
Daniel,
I'm with you on this one. I met the man who makes these. Great guy. I can't wait to have him make me one. At the time I had some $ but did not act on it Les had some Coffee wood that was sweet. It depends on what he has on hand at the time. ARRON, like Bry pointed out we can only show you what is out there. If you want something that is truly you, make it yourself. Next best is to find someone like Les with Thor Tampers and have him make something that is very personal to you. For me when it comes to custom work I need to know the artist if I'm going to endorse him or her.
Have fun in your search. Every day a new model / design is built.
Joseph

Reg Barber. Nicest guy in the industry, sets the standard for quality and makes the WBC trophies. Check out his flickr link on his site. www.coffeetamper.com
He may be the nicest guy in the industry but he doesn't respond to emails and I am not the first one to complain about that either. Over three weeks ago I sent him an inquiry and followed up on it last week and no reply. I got tired of waiting and ordered a custom Torr Tamper. Never understood why anyone would spend their money on a website soliciting business and then turn their back on it.

Re Reg Barber. I've tried to order one before, and I had a couple of questions. Likewise, I've received no response. He does have nice tampers--I've used quite a few of the. But, I think Reg needs to hire someone to man the email accounts. Just sayin'...
I do know he just had to lay some people off . (and I'm making excuses for him cause he's a friend.) You could try calling. If you search Victoria BC phone directory under his name you might get his shop.

I ordered one from Reg probably about eight months ago. Emailed with questions and got same day response. Had my new custom tamp in about a week. Wonder what's going on.

Wow, I had no idea there were so many options! Thank ALL of you for your input! I've seen some awesome tampers, and am totally stoked on the TORR. I wouldn't mind having a shift knob, if/when I get around to making one! I like to keep it fun; on an older Camry I used to have, I used a skateboard wheel for the shift knob. It was a simple joy in life to spin it around at red lights!

Ha! The shifter on my truck is a Harp tap handle. It gets some strange looks at stop lights...
Thanks for your kind attention on our tampers, here is our 2010 new tampers, hope you would like it. And we can engrave your logo on the tamper handle as well. Thanks!
