If you are a barista or shop, are you interested in a barista exchange with another coffee shop/barista?
yes
Tell us more about your coffee shop or barista skills and what you can offer in regards to an exchange.
I care a lot about making good coffee, and I'm eager to learn as much as possible.
What cities or countries are you interested in traveling to?
guatemala, costa rica, Ethiopia... pretty much anywhere.
About Me:
I am 21 years old, and have worked in two coffee shops; one in Houston and one in Maryland. I'm a vegan, crafter(sewing, cross stitch, knitting), environmentalist, SPCA volunteer, and tea drinker. I'm a supporter of fair trade, but really... I'm just not a fan of injustice.
Things I will admit:
1) I recently went vegan, so I'm a little worried that my choice to not drink milk might hold me back from being the best barista I can be. If i can't taste the drinks I serve, how can i improve them?
2) Ironically enough, I don't really drink much coffee. I never have. I stumbled into my first job as a barista, and fell in love with preparing drinks.
3) I can't seem to drink black coffee (and semi-enjoy it) for the life of me (but I do like iced coffee)
4) I can't tell the difference between most coffee blends. (I supposed I would need to like black coffee before I can distinguish between them).
BUT! I'm determined to change what I can to better myself and my career. At this point, I'm just interested in being trained in as many things as possible. I crave coffee knowledge, and I feel an overwhelming need to obtain as much as possible. If I'm going to churn out lattes for 40+ hours a week, it's probably good to atleast know what the hell I'm talking about.
I'd love to attend training at many different places (unfortunately, my bank account says otherwise), and I'd eventually like to learn how to do coffee cuppings, how the espresso machine works on the inside, maybe a little maintence/repair training, and I'd definitely be interesting in learning how to roast eventually. I wish I had more oppertunities to stop lurking youtube tutorials(but thank you, Ritual!) and actually participate.
long term goals? I actually want to open some sort of vegan bakery, with a full espresso bar. My passions are baking pastries and making damn good coffee; seems like I sould do something with that. I'd like to attend cullinary school for baking at some point, and be trained formally as a barista (ABCS? Intelligentsia?).
I just want to be good at what i love to do. oh, and I don't want to spend my life in a cubicle. :D

What is your favorite thing about the coffee industry?
Yes, it's in a good way. Don't worry about not drinking milk and still becoming a great Barista, you can tell from the look of the milk, the smell and the feel of it, that you have either made a good or bad drink. I spend about 12 hours a day roasting, blending, tasting, buying counting, and selling coffee, but I don't drink that much of it at all. What coffee are you drinking today. Today, Ibrewed a custom dark roast blend that we roasted for one of our wholesale accounts.
Hey Kristen. It's nice to see someone in the same boat as me. I hope wherever you work you are free to make good coffee. Unfortunately the place I work won't even let me steam milk with my bare hands any more which really set me back. Hopefully I can find somewhere else to work.
