So at my cafe we have a regular who is Argentinian. She always orders what's basically a 12 oz latte with half a shot in it. We roll our eyes and make it. TODAY, however, she found a video of this drink being made at a cafe back home. It seems the barista steams the milk, fills the mug about halfway, and then pulls what looks like a 4 or 5 second shot directly into the milk, and finishes by topping it with a cappucino-like amount of dry foam. She says this is a very popular drink in Argentina, it's called a lachrimato? Something along those lines? Has the word 'lachrima' in it, she says this is because you use just a 'tear's worth' of espresso. The milk seems pretty self-explanatory but we're at a loss about getting this shot timing right.

This poor woman comes in every day and has tried and tried to explain this drink to us, she's awesome and we'd like to get it right. Has ANYONE heard of this, or better yet, made one?

Although I've never been to Argentina or prepared this drink, I do speak Spanish and your drink is called "una lágrima", a "teardrop" as you indicated. Sounds like it's basically the velvety steamed milk of a latte with just a dribble of espresso, producing just a touch of coffee flavor. Muy interesante!

I'd pull my shot as normal taking just the center portion for her bev. (like if doing the split the shot into a number of shot glasses taste excercise) For simplicity of making I'd steam the 12oz volume of milk but thicker cap style and pour into the espresso. If that wasn't satisfactory to her tastes I'd make her another no charge. Next go round I'd use a spoon holding back the foam and pour into cup, center pull of shot into cup, then foam from pitcher into cup as per video. It may well be no or minimal difference in taste, but difference in how visually made could make a psychological difference to her.

If a regular wants to pay for 80% of her shot to go in the drip tray, I'd let her day after day kaching after kaching. If I owned a bar and a regular customer scotch drinker wanted just a teardrop of scotch and water I'd do the same, don't care what the neat scotch drinkers think, care what kaching sounds like keeping the doors open.
