Consider ASCAP/BMI licensing fees in this process. You'll need to pay them in many cases. Muzak has them included. Not required for FM/HD radio, perhaps also XM/Sirius.
We use XM/Sirius and have a 3 year subscription. It's usually tuned to The Loft, The Coffee House, or The Spectrum. Licensing fees are built into the subscription cost. Not bad for around $8/month.
At the shop I am the manager for we use an ipod dock with the music going through the sound system.
Music is important to our store so we try to have a good mix of local and national bands on the playlist. We have different playlists designated for different times of day. Our baristas are also allowed (within reason) to pick an album or even hook up their own ipod.
If you just use an iPod and are not paying royalty fees, then you are illegally using others music for your monetary gain. Pay for it, do it right.
Thank you Mark,
I forgot to mention that in my post.
We do also pay a licensing fee... I don't know off the top of my head who we pay.... maybe APRA? maybe not.
We also have a license to allow the bands that play in our store to play covers songs.

You hopefully pay all 3: ASCAP, BMI, and SESAC.
Funny that XM is said to have the licensing fees factored in... In my experience, which admittedly was about 2 1/2 years ago, it did not. We received calls from ASCAP all the time harassing us. The shop was on it's way out anyway so it didn't matter, but still... I'd double check just to make sure.

And before we get all sidetracked and don't mention the thread... Ta-Da. All about ASCAP crap...

Hey Jason.
At our store a lot of times we use grooveshark.com, or pandora.com
not to mention cd's, & ipods.
We generally leave it up to the baristas, however as long as it's not offending anyone.
I guess sometimes I have to regulate on my staff. I guess it depends.
As a lover of ALL types of music, we just keep it simple. No need for a subscription when there are tons of other sources.
Or if you want to hire me, I'd be glad to come out & be your house DJ...

Yes but you have to pay ASCAP/BMI/SESAC if you use Pandora or any other free service that isn't AM/FM/HD radio as far as I know.

Pandora specifically states in it's terms of use that it's licensing does not allow you to play it in your restaurant, bar or coffee shop (in almost those exact words).

Check out the link to that thread I posted. ASCAP will find and destroy you if you aren't careful. Happened at the smallest and lowest volume shop I've ever worked at, and we just used an iPod...
