WBC officiaL language
I am very praud to say that our guy from Croatia has done well.
But I have a doubth that English should be only to speak on floor.
We must be able to present our Country in our own lenguage and judges should have interpether for next year , winers are 2 years in a row from English speaking region.
If anybody can say ...
...speak now or be silent forever.

what language finalists are talking dont have anything with their knowledge!!!!
will all do respect, you are my friend but you were talking croatian at our nationals and you didnt win....
its not about what you talk and in what language, judges are not talking to you at all, they listen, but language is not something that is pushing you back, in my point of view, is a big advance for competitor, you can talk whatever language you want...yirgacheffe is yirgacheffe in every language...
i dont understand this post at all...
theres no obligation for a competitor to talk english, no obligation to look at judges and make eye contact...
wbc understands culture differences and is a key to success and one of the ways to learn and spread the knowledge of barista craft for each and every competitor at any competition in the world...
as english is international as french is, croatian is too...

I agree it is a limit to have to use English in international competitions, takes advantage of the English mother tongue, do not know the solution but the results confirm the benefit. In a championship proper there should be no benefits to anyone. Roberto hello to all
Io sono d´accordo é un limite dover usare L´inglese nelle competizioni internazionali, si avvantaggia gli inglesi di madre lingua, non conosco la soluzione, ma i risultati confermano il vantaggio. In un campionato corretto non ci dovrebbero essere vantaggi per nessuno. ciao a tutti Roberto

... Hungary, South Korea ... I didnt know English is an official language in Hungary ;-)
No one is forced to speak English at WBC ... if you cant, get an interpreter ... our Czech champion doesnt speak a word of English and still was able to go through the whole presentation in English ... although learned by heart and obviously with pronunciation mistakes ...

I am pretty sure that you can as for a translator if you don't want to speak English. Also I am pretty sure that enlgish is a second language to some judges, so I doubt that they are wanting you to speak english. I know that more than a few presentations were in Spanish.

Also look at the score sheet setup. Do tech scores have anything to do with laguage? Not really. Most of the sensory score sheet is directly relating to the drink sitting in front of the judges. While I could possibly, I stress possibly, see this effecting over impressions and maybe some parts of the head judge sheet and that's it, but even at that I really don't see this as being a valid issue. Not only would these parts of the scoring be negligable amounts at most; but, if this actually DID pose a problem, there are solutions. If you are at the level of WBC competition, and you are really worried about this, I would suspect that you would be determined enough to be willing to spend the time with a translator. Just my 2 cents to add to this pocket full of change.

I'm with my man Nik on this one. The WBC doesn't score you any differently if you can't speak English. Work on the things you can change.

the language that should be used is in the hands of more than one.
this is my winning language fro next wbc; roaster could be anette moldvaer that is norwegian/british, trainer could be james hoffmann or tim wendelboe that are british and norwegian, tech guy can be john sanders that is canadian (and hes funny too), training rooms could be in the states due to growing barista community that understands what we are doing and why and great supply of fine green coffees, and in team i will invite few danish and edwin martinez from guatemala...and on the end, bring back marzocco to wbc and become a new world barista champion!
one i missed, jay caragay for his knowledge in food and beverages!
do we need more?
we wont talk at all, we will laugh all day!!!
