I have had barista experience on several great machines, LaMarzocco, Simonelli, Conti, Rancillio and have my personal opinions on them.

My question is regarding the "Brasilia Excelsior 3" espresso machine.  I have read and read and watched youtube videos (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TofaGbRnCZY) about this machine but it is one thing to read about an item versus the experience of putting one into practical use on a high volume barista line.  SOOO, if you have logged time on one of these Brasilia Excelsior espresso machines I would be very appreciative to hear your assesment of its performance, stability, ease of use, ergonomics for the barista etc...anything no matter how little or much will be hugely appreciated.

I saw one on a local bar a couple of months ago. Looked like a Harley... in a good way. Probably the only Brasilia in town though (aside from the wreck in my shop that the owner hasn't picked up yet - doesn't want to pay me to take it to the landfill). I think these machines may have potential... there just aren't that many out there for me to play with.

PS... the one in my shop used optical flowmeters (which I was treating as obsolete and replacing with conventional), ceramic steam valves which cost 5x as much to rebuild, and drew 20% more amperage than shown on the rating plate. Scared the hell out of me - I thought it was going to catch on fire.

Brady, thank you for your reply. I have spoken with the folks at Brasilia and there is not anywhere relatively close I could go to and watch it in action. Have you thought of investing in a fire-proof barista apron, glad you weren't the victim of spotaneous barista combution due to junk machine.

Thanks! It was a little weird, to be honest. In the time I've been working on machines, that's the only one I've ever been even a little afraid of. (Except perhaps the Astoria with the cracked boiler... didn't notice the crack until it was starting to pressurize. Power off, open wands, run like hell.)

For my money, the fact that there isn't one located anywhere even close says a lot...

That said, I am still quite curious about this machine as well. If I get the call to service the one I saw in my market I'll let you know what I find out. Note that I don't expect anyone to service that machine for at least another six months though. Restaurant people tend to run them till they stop working.
