Trying to work on my business plan...head hurts!...

Has anybody any information or statistics? I vaguely remember somewhere that while chains like *$ are shutting stores, independents are still going strong, although perhaps tightening the belt a bit.

For general discussion, make sure you check out the ongoing "Economic Crunch" thread:

I seem to recall specific month-over-month numbers being tossed around a bit, and lots of usefulness for key things to do. Its a monster, but worth your time. Note that the discussion started quite a while ago, so keep that in mind on the initial pages.

People still drink coffee. The ones that still have their jobs still stop for it in the morning. The commercial real estate market seems to be reacting well and offering nice terms to fill spaces. I personally think its a great time to start planning a new coffee shop.
+1

It's a great time to start a shop if you have the right location and terms.

+2 we are expanding fairly aggresively this year. Opening our first off-shore roastery end of this month. I have found that in our market growth has slowed, but we are still growing. Brady is right in saying commercial property managers are being proactive in offering good deals on retail space. I think in diversity lies opportunity. Any other approach to the current economic situation could spell problems for a healthy business
Hi Paul, here in Brazil we have lots of information available (national and international markets, trends, consumption, stats, etc) . Just let me know, more speciaficaly, what kind of figures you want. I might be able to gather the latest ones and translate to send to you.
Cheers
Paul,
I hear ya! I'm slowly but surely getting through mine. Here's what I have in my plan as far as the trend goes...

Americans drink more than 300 million cups of coffee daily with sales in the US forecast to grow from 12.27 billion in 2006 to 39.5 billion by 2011.

Hope that helps!

Devon, what is the source of that information? Could you post a link or reference?

Thanks

One great resource that I'm using in putting together my business plan is the 2009 State of the Industry issue of CoffeeTalk Magazine. Great collection of articles by industry experts. Plus, it's free and online for all to peruse!
