Cedric, I'd be in, and I know some of my employees would come. Where at and when?

Hi everyone! I'm Cedric from Ames, Iowa. Glad to see so many coffee nerds in the midwest =P Anyone in the area want to do a little barista jam in Ames, Iowa?

Barat from Smokey Row based out of Pleasantville, IA. 3 shops currently (Pleasantville, Pella, Oskaloosa) with 1 coming soon to Des Moines. We're also a roaster/distributor. Glad to be a part of the Midwest Group. www.smokeyrow.com

Just wanted to say hello to everyone! I just recently moved from Texas to Indiana and thought this might be the right group for me.

Hey everyone,
As usual I am completely swamped by the daunting errands of ones life... New task at hand.....Devise and map out a resourceful and efficent training program for baristas....Great..I do not get paid enough to do all of this.. I really want to hit home the seriousness, the passion, the hard work that is gone through to give us the privelage of creating the beverage based around the bean... Then you see..unmotivated...college kids..adults...all people who are there for the paycheck alone... What do I do?? Things that can be motivating....I want to include history, technique... and I dont want to keep making them watch videos.. Can anyone help me?

I think small town midwesterners are definitely more geared to the independents. Face it, a large chain wouldn't give a tiny town a second thought, and they know we bring them the chance for something upscale in a little town. The regulars bring their visitors in to see us, to brag about what little Sutherland, Iowa has to offer.

As far as the economics, we are feeling it and adjusting for it. We have decreased our evening hours and are focusing more on morning and noon and providing low cost food to accompany it. It seems to be helping. But the lattes and caps are on a definite downswing. I'm selling alot of good drip coffee, though and alot more beans. If I had a wholesale distributor for kitchen level coffee grinders, I could probably make a mint.

Hey Everyone! I was raised In KC MO . Attended school in St.Louis, MO --moved to Billings,MT and relocated back to where family is in Springfield, MO. How are all of your places weathering the economical storm? Do you think that there are more consumers who are enthusiastic toward the independent and locally owned shop compared to the chain?
