I have had my Virtuoso for about 2-3 years. AT about $250 it wasn't cheap but I appreciated the fine job it did grinding coffee, its appearance and its apparent quality build. 

Two days ago, it whirled but it didn't grind. After a little online research I took it apart and discovered a mess inside.

The main "Large Metal Gear" that drives the burr is chewed up and there are metal filings inside of the gear housing. I an't tell for sure but it appears that the motor shaft with the drive gear on it may be beyond wear tolerance. 

If you look at the pictures I have attached you will see the teeth missing at about 11 O'Clock.

You will also see a bunch of metal filings, and a motor with drive gear that looks questionable. No wonder my coffe has been tasting a little metallic. 

The nut holding the large drive gear is on tight and there is very little leverage that I can put on the gear teeth to get it off. This may call for sending it in for repair. 

I am bummed. It is hard to believe that the resistance of a coffee bean in the burr is going to cause a metal gear to shred. Trust me I haven't been sending any rocks through. I'm inclined  to believe that the alignment of drive gear to large gear was set improperly in manufacturing.

Does anyone have any experience with these? Has anyone seen a good drive gear so they can tell me if my motor/drive gear is probably shot or not. Where do I get it fixed- is it worth it? I'd really like some feedback/advice on this issue.
