Tell us more about your coffee shop or barista skills.
We started roasting commercially in December 2007, with the idea that we would build experience that will be useful in opening our own coffee shop in Texas when we relocate next year.
About Me:
I am a wife and mother of a 22 year old daughter in college. I have been in real estate associated businesses for 20+ years, but fell in love with coffee roasting when I started doing it for personal use a couple of years ago. At that point the dream was born to open a coffee shop that would be focused on 20-30 year olds, with a music and art venue. So my husband and I had a small coffee roaster built here in Oklahoma City, and I have been roasting for a steadily increasing number of individuals since then. I am very committed to the environment, so I am really not all that interested in building a huge non-local following.
About My Company:
Urban Coffee Company is a roast-to-order home operation. We are members of the Oklahoma Food Cooperative, where we sell approximately half of our coffee each month. The rest of our customers are primarily word of mouth, although we have started doing some local advertising recently. Already knowing that we are relocating in a year, makes it difficult to do a lot of long-range planning, but we do enjoy a small but loyal following.
What is your favorite thing about the coffee industry?
The camaraderie, the quest for the ever-elusive perfect cup of coffee, and the slightly (?) bohemian culture associated with it. It keeps me young!
