One of the things that I bugs me are customers that walk in talking on their cell phone, order while talking on the cell phone, and walk out....still on their cell phone.

What's your irk at work?

What irks me at work?

Music- too much attention on listening to your favorite tunes than focusing on the craft
Attention to Detail - like, why don't you actually place the bagel in the bag and fold it for the customer?
Sense of Urgency - the customer is waiting so maintain focus and get the product to the customer.

These are the details (or lack of) that irks me at work. Quite honestly, I don't care if the customer is on the phone.
The barista is not a vending machine. Take the phone off of your ear and acknowledge that you are dealing with a human being. I am with you Cedric. Some people realize that it is rude and apologize, I am ok with that. Maybe the call was truly more important than me, I understand. But at least treat me like a person.

I agree with the music, attention to detail, and urgency also. Sometimes dealing with co-workers is awful. It really pisses me off if I am the barista and the person working the counter has bad customer service skills. Makes me feel a little helpless. It is like you mouth is saying things and you have no control over it.
Back seat baristaing.. In other words, watching me make their latte while shouting things they want done to it that they had already asked for at the counter. I can understand if someone orders decaf and wants to make sure it's not regular, but I am sure that I can make someone a better latte if they aren't distracting me.

I also don't like when people yell at me for being out of something they want. It is beyond my control and though i would like to serve it to them, I cannot. Yelling doesn't really get it faster.
Work Irk No. 28 - drive thru customers that bail out of line, walk in to the coffee house counter and expect to be next.
Work Irk No. 1 - dumping their old coffee out between their car and service window, splashing all over our building. I want to ask if I can come over to their house and dump my drinks on their driveway - along with a couple cigarette butts and wad of gum - then ask if they could take my trash bag full of god knows what.

Thanks, I'm done.
costumers telling me how to do their drink...like they know something....
im able to kill....make it short, hot, strong, half decaff....
even when im writing this i want to kill my wife that is just a feet away from me reading something how nervous i am while reminding of those people....or this is what i really want???? lol
That's one thing I like about not having a drive thru. But the shop I used to work for had a drive thru and I know how you feel.

I feel like the only time ive really gotten mad is when older barista came into our shop and treated like i knew nothing because I was clearly younger than her. She told me that I was making her 20 ounce (Im not the manager and I dont choose the sizes) iced latte wrong that i was going to water the drink down...

(slight segue)
We steam the milk for an iced latte to ~104 to break down some of the enzymes making the drink sweeter and have a nice micro foam top. Then pour it over a full cup of ice, because less milk is used the drink is actually less expensive than the similar sized hot latte. Some customers are confused by this, but I always try to get them to try it a new way. Of course if they are not happy with this method I am happy to remake the drink in the fashion of their choosing.

It was just infuriating for an older barista to treat me as dirt, and complain about me watering down her 20 ounce drink.
My biggest IRK is when they come to my drive up window and while talking on their cellphone ask ME to HOLD On for a sec. Give Me a Break!!!
At the counter, I just move to the next person. Too bad you can't do that at the drive thru.

"Hey there! How you doin?"

"16oz NF SF Hazelnut Cappuccino."

.......

I wish I could somehow save the inner peace that's brought about by the confusion of that customer interaction and their drink order.
I am the only barista that keeps mugs and tea glasses on top of the espresso machine at work. every one else puts them on a shelf. they don't practice cup warming. All our tea cup crack as hot water is poured in them. I never have that problem because the cups are on a hot surface. They also brush espresso ground from the counter into the floor drain. That drain always cloggs and I am the one who cleans it.
