This is a very difficult question to answer in text. I would simply recommend a book. Everything but Espresso by Scott Rao. Outstanding book, he will answer all of your questions.
You could also go to HasBean or the "In My Mug" podcast with Steven Leighton (sp) and see some awesome videos on proper brewing methods
