so glad i decided to wander over to your page again (your reply didn't post on my page)...and sorry for my delay this time. those travel plans sound amazing and i understand how involved things become; just finished planning our own trip to costa rica and if u are an active traveler there are so many details.

yes! i am definitely interested in exploring it further. i've never been to nicaragua, but actually i would love to collaborate on such a project and it also would be an amazing learning experience for me as well. you're probably in guatemala now; when you return, shoot me an email at trpilarz@yahoo.es and let's set up a time we could talk.

un saludo y muy buen viaje!

sorry about that. we are planning a trip to Guatemala in two weeks, Ethiopia, Rwanda and Burundi in September, Haiti in November... so i have been so busy on all this. What I was thinking is that we have a great project in Nicaragua, a cafe/roasterie that is owned and operated by a prosthetic clinic that provides free limbs ane therapy to coffee landmine victims. The cafe needs some advice on menus, food prep, some barista training, etc. it is run by great hearted, well intentioned people without a lot of skill, so it is a real clean slate. In other words, any help would be great help, even helping design or make signs for the place. are you interested? it could be a one week gig or even five days.

still wondering what that "very special" something is that you have in mind...

btw, your guatemala visit sounds very cool!
best,

Hi Sonia!

It would be fun to work with my friends in El Salvador again! I am always eager to help farmers increase income and better their lives. So keep in touch, and the next time IO go to Central America I will swing over. I will be in Guatemala for the first week of July, but my schedule is already made and pretty tight. I will be taking my sixteen year old daughter down to work for a month in five indigenous villages with the teenage girls on self-esteem. Great work!

Let me know more about what you guys are up to. I have a lot of respect for Luis and the work you are doing. I also had a great time at the dance clubs and bars! Woo-hoo!
best,

what an honor dean-have to admit i'm a fan! the short answer to your question is i've worked a stint at s'bucks (gasp!) and a couple of independents sporadically over the years, mostly bar experience. at home though, i'm a foodie that cooks, bakes, and recently has gotten into home roasting (thanx for sending the beans!) i'm super committed to organics/FT and the politics behind it all-for 3 years i've been host for an organic csa in my area and have learned a ton!

i've tried to break into coffee as a viable career, but nobody wants to hire a barista with a masters degree (even p/t) and although not impossible, moving is more complicated as you get older unless the offer is really good. so, much of my coffee background is self-taught...and i'm determined as ever to make it a f/t gig, which likely means doing my own thing.

looking forward to hearing your ideas...you have definitely "piqued" my interest. :) saludos!
