What size and shape of steaming pitchers should I be looking for? I want to be able to experiment with latte art eventually...

The size depends on what size drink your pouring. I like a tapered pitcher with a spout. Hope this helps.

Thanks Troy. Are there better brands or a certain quality that I need to look for....or is this really overthinking things?

Hi Rob. Agreeing with Troy on the tapered with spout - can't beat it for a daily-use pitcher. I get decent art using one. I have a spouted bell "art pitcher" and never use it.

Regarding quality, we've been using el-cheapo unbranded stainless for over a year and they are fine. I generally like one with a little finer point on the spout for art - Updates are nicer and my fav so far.

Size - you want to start with your pitcher between 1/4 and 1/2 full. I use the 20oz is most often, it does enough milk for a 12 or 16 oz latte. A 12 oz is nice for capps and maccs. 33oz is great for two 12oz or a 20oz "big gulp". I have a 50oz too that is good for two 20oz or soaking portafilter handles :). At our shop (we run a pretty typical "2nd wave" menu) I use the 20oz pitchers most, the 33 and 12 oz sometimes, the 50oz almost never.

I have to say, ever since Terry at espressoparts.com turned me onto the spouted bell pitcher, my life has never been the same. I use the 16 oz. to pour art, and the milk it makes is amazing. We all know that the bells let the milk roll around the bottom, making the really good microfoam, but the ability to pour with the spout makes it perfect. I highly recommend the spouted bell. It's made by Rattleware, and can be picked up at espressoparts.com.

Do you guys find these a little harder to keep clean for constant bar use?

I still like the straight sided one... kinda like learning to play pool with the house cue instead of the nice custom one you bring with you?
Anyone find a bell with a spout for latte art that has measurements marked on the inside, we have a mish mosh of pitchers in my shop and I can't help but think that our wastage would be lower with marked pitchers or minimally all the same pitcher.
