Looks like we are going to have to get out of the business. Does anyone have any suggestions on the value of commercial coffee gear? Most of it is 5 years old and all of it is quality gear that has worked fine for us this past year, other than minor hiccups and learning curves.

Most stuff in decent working order is worth between 10-15% of its original retail value. With some exceptions for higher end equipment. If you email an equipment list I'll provide my private opinion on values. Sorry to hear things haven't worked out for you.
what do you have
We've got an Astoria Argenta 2 Group Semi-Automatic Espresso Machine, a couple of mazzer grinders, one of which I believe is a major, the other I believe is a super jolly...we also have a bunn 3lb bulk grinder, as well as a double hopper bulk grinder...those are the big items, other than an island oasis blender...
I will be working on a full list with part numbers this week. 10-15% breaks my heart :(...but failing so utterly has been even worse...

i read your profile, were you just unable to overcome the reputation the previous owners had destroyed? sorry to hear you're having to close, is there any way you could try to ride it out for a few months more?
I echo Jared,

Are you absolutely at the point you need to give in or can you restructure and forge ahead delicately... but boldly.

As to your question:

Provided you are the original owner of the equipment - wasn't used when you bought it, and can show a maintenance schedule... after five years, value is around 15 cents on the dollar - with the exception of certain espresso machines which will hold their value very well and be closer to 40 cents on the dollar or better. Highly sought after equipment may hold a higher value, but in general, I think that's what you're looking at.

Things like refrigerators, ice machines, etc. with compressors usually don't have any warranty past five years and it's the compressor that will need replacing. That is why their true value is so low. However any replacement of key components can help maintain a higher value.

A good way to gauge is to find a local seller of used restaurant equipment and price it in that range minus a little bit. While these places generally have no warranty on their equipment, everything tends to be "professionally" refurbished. If you are selling as is...
Sorry to here you're throwing in the towel already, less than a year...

The Mazzers & Bunn G3 would be exceptions to the 10-15% original retail, likely can get more like 25-35%.
no, they are not doserless.

we got sideswiped by two things: 1) a layoff (myself) from a well paying job...2) an advertising campaign by a local donut shop pushing gourmet coffee that is actually gas station hot water and powder mix...

So the growth we needed (and expected) in November and December has not happened at all. We actually lost sales in November over those in October. December is charting the same...25-30 cups a day...
If we could hang on, we would. We are in a town of 30,000 with 3 small colleges and only 1 other "gourmet" shop that is downtown selling mediocre coffee. The traffic is here, I just can't afford the tools to direct it...we are that busted...We have even been offered a higher traffic location, closer to the larger of the colleges. The rent is even $100 cheaper...Literally, we are that flat broke with 0 chance of loans given the current economy and our lack of credit due to student loans...

In the meanwhile, an opportunity came up in my personal life that I would be an idiot to not pursue.

I'd be interested in the 3lb bulk grinder. pm me. Is there any possibility that you could close up and put things in storage while you get things sorted money wise? then reopen in a year or so?
