I have heard often in my research that most places could never survive selling coffee drinks alone. It's the additional menu items that bring them to a break even/profit.

Thoughts on this?

Depends on a lot of things--location, how much you're paying for beans versus food/retail etc. From the numbers alone, it seems like our coffee shop could easily survive on drinks alone--indeed, the coffee is really where the profit is. We do, however, sell a lot of bagels, sandwiches, pastries, etc, and it's hard to say how many people that brings in the door, who then order lattes or whatever, who wouldn't otherwise have come in.
Because we are primarily a drive thru shop, people come to me for drinks. I hardly sell any food. I do have outdoor seating but that is rarely used. I think when people start to view me as a place to seat and relax I may sell more food.
