I received an email from a potential client Friday. He was contemplating buying a used espresso machine and asked if I thought the asking price was fair. Not being able to see the machine, I gave him a couple of considerations that might reduce the value, but assuming decent condition the asking price for this machine seemed fair to me.

This got me thinking... aside from a couple of easy calls (for example very new lightly used machines and stuff that is one step up from total junk), there's a whole segment of the used-machine market that I'm not terribly comfortable assigning a price to. Much as I've tried to remember to watch Craigslist to see what stuff seems to be going for, I've had a hard time paying attention just for research's sake.

I thought it might be kinda fun to do a little poll of sorts... "What's this machine worth?" I'll throw out a couple of machines of various manufacturer, configuration, and condition... you throw out what you feel is a fair price and, if you are so inclined, your reasoning. Let's assume it's local, so no shipping issues. Also assume that all parts and accessories are present, and that any storage is clean and heated storage.

Sound like fun?

Nothing wrong with skipping any you aren't familiar with or would never consider buying. Sticking with what you know is fine.

Ok, here goes...

1. 2001 La Marzocco Linea 2 EE. Semiauto machine. Machine appears somewhat worn but clean. Machine is in storage.

2. 2008 Nuova Simonelli Aurelia 3 V. Volumetric machine. Machine appears fairly new and clean. Machine is set up on the bar at a just-closed cafe.

3. 2006 La Marzocco Linea 3 AV. Volumetric machine. Machine appears worn but clean. Machine is currently in service at a restaurant.

4.2008 Mazzer Super Jolly doser grinder. Grinder is dirty but in good condition.

5. 2005 Rancilio Classe 8 3 DE. Volumetric machine. Machine appears dirty but in good condition. Machine is currently in use in an independent coffeehouse.

6. 1999 Astoria Argenta SAE 2. Volumetric machine. Machine appears clean but very worn. Machine is set up on the bar of a just-closed coffeehouse.

7. 2009 Mazzer Robur doser grinder. Grinder is clean and in good condition.

8. 2009 La Marzocco FB80 2EE. Semiauto machine. Machine appears new. Machine is in storage.

Kinda randomly sampled a couple of different machines. Please feel free to add those that I missed, but number them too if you do.

Thanks for playing!

Ok number one is worth about 1100, number I'm not super familiar with but I'm guessing about 3500. Number three is about 3000. Number four is 300 to 350. Number five I have to idea. The owner of.number six is probably asking 1200 but will be lucky to get 300. Number seven goes for 800. And number eight goes for 4500.

Now what do I win? ;)

This is spot-on. I have this machine! And it's currently waiting for me to get a bigger house, where it will go on the home coffee bar.
