Hey all, it has been a while since I posted anything on here but I have recently come up against a brick wall so to speak. I work in a shop that recently got an Astoria Plus 4 You, and while I love the machine and think it is just nifty I was wondering what the benefits are to being able to adjust the brew temp and the group temp. We just switched blends as well, going with a single origin Sumatra Gayo Mtn, and I feel that with the current temp it always runs a bit fast no matter what I do to the grind or tamping pressure. I suppose I was wondering if anyone had any notes or thoughts for me.

I demoed this machine at the SCAA Expo in GA last year, but it has been so long and I was so overwhelmed by the insanity of the entire event (not to mention my tasters test and bga programs) that I forgot to ask about this basic feature of the machine.

thanks
ryan

As you know, water temps are fun to play with. In my shop we argue what temp things should be. I like lower temps, say 180. I feel like I get a sweeter cup. Others feel like something closer to 200, which I feel like start to taste bitter. And I would even say that those temps could change based on the coffee its self. I like my Pacific Rim coffees and blends slightly hotter than say a really fruity African.

That is one of the ideas with the plus 4 you. Play around and see what differences you get. And let me know. My Astoria isn't adjustable and I would love to know what happens when you play with temps.

And as far as your SO espresso. I went from a fairly dark roasted blend (8% Mexican Robusta, 12% Monsoon Malabar, 30% Costa Rica, and 50% Brasil) to a very light roast all peaberry blend (33% Tanzanian Peaberry, 67% Brasil). I had to adjust my grinder way out of what I would expect. It is another thing that you may just have to play with. Oh, the peaberry espresso blend was OK. I wish I had taken it a bit darker. It was too light to say much about it.
