Greetings everyone...I'm experimenting with my new toy, a yama 3-cup siphon. I've watched videos and searched every thread about siphons on this beautiful site. For some reason I cannot get the water in the lower bowl to boil. It's been on the flame for about 30 minutes now with nothing. I am even pre-boiling the water in an electric kettle and pouring directly into the bowl. Can someone please correct the err of my ways?

Also interested in your favorite origin/region coffee on the siphon...suggestions?

Thank you!

Are you using isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol)?  This type of alcohol is usually diluted to 70ish % with water and doesn't burn near hot enough.  Most hardware stores have denatured alcohol (in the paint section likely).  Use this and it should help immensely.

I would suggest your next step would be a butane burner when you have the cash. They are available in many specialty coffee stores.  Although our site is not yet live (in a week or so), we currently have the Rekrow model in stock.  I would be happy to give you a great offer if the denatured alcohol fix isn't enough for you.   Send me an email at Keith@VeniaCoffee.com

I use a butane burner, works real nice.

Have the chain in the bottom bowl right?  It's never going to look like it's boiling if you don't have something for the bubbles to form on.  Then it will simply blow boiling water all over you and anything withing 5 feet when you try to insert the glass rod.
