Greetings.

I've spent about the last hour looking into the possibility of acquiring a barista trophy for a jam-like competition. I would love to have it be a portafilter or tamper of some sort. I just cannot find anything on the internet that is close to what I want.

Are most competition trophies custom-made?

If so, where are you finding them and are they $$$?

Any tips of finding said trophies on the cheap?

Any help is appreciated.

Jam trophies don't have to be actual trophies. Coffee people are generally kind of fun & funky and don't mind things a little ad-hoc. For our monthly Providence Coffee Society jams, we have a Green Jacket (bought for $5 at the Salvation Army) that the previous winner dons for the current contest, after adding an accoutrement of their choice (usually buttons, patches, old dispersion screens, etc). Something like this can become a fun tradition.

For our in-house competitions I usually head to Savers or Salvation Army (or Good Will or whatever is in your area) and figure out ways to creatively use a hot glue gun. Old candlestick holders with a demitasse hot-glued to the top are easy, fun alternatives to spending big bucks at a trophy shop. If you have old tampers or portafilters laying around, all the better!
