I got an email from Joshua Lurie at Food GPS out of L.A. with links to two articles he wrote on the new Intelligentsia Venice location, and a bit on their hiring and training strategies.

He gives a pretty detailed write up after taking a tour with fellow bXers, Kyle Glanville and Ryan Wilbur. The new shop sounds very cool, and will truly be a new take on retail coffee. I look forward to seeing it come to fruition and wish the team at Intelly the best.

Kyle G's title changed from Manager of Espresso Research Development on the Dec 10 post to Director of Innovation on these... I like the new one - applies to espresso and creating spaces/experiences like this one.
Wow Matt, I have to say that is a pretty incredible process. I would love that challenge or to create that sort of challenge for a staff. It would really create a "body" function. Each person knowing how to operate with the other because they have walked in their shoes while creating a strong sense of owner ship in how each application of a cafe is dealt with. It was also really cool to see that they don't just "test to pass". That there is a sense of value on your knowledge which qualifies you to test. It would also ensure a really fantastic finished cup so every person before the bean made it to you, gets credit.
At our table at home every night we say a prayer over the food not just blessing the house cook but also "bless all the hands that prepared it" or in a sense "got it to our table". Whether the meal is good or bad we still think credit stems back to all the vision and hard efforts of farmers, sales people, governments, drivers, clerks...so much. Noah and Jude notice if we don't say it or when a guests prays and leaves it out, which is really cool.
Great link, very thought provoking.
