It is interesting to see more and more articles and declarations from retailers that sales are down. It does seem however that there are still ways to cater to your regulars, even if they are buying fewer cappuccinos. There is a cool article in the San Diego Tribune's Smart Living section today (yes, got a nice quote too) :) but I thought it would make a good discussion on how retailers can promote more whole bean sales, French Press sales, etc. in their shops.

Have any retailers on bX witnessed more whole bean sale? Are you already selling home brewing equipment? Offering brewing guides?

There have been studies done that 50% of people that usually brew coffee at home in the morning, also go to a coffee shop regularly, so this could be a good percentage of customers.

Whole bean sales are up for us, but that could be because we just started roasting. I did sell a lot of French presses at Christmas, but none since.
I have the Planetary Designs tea brewers as well, and I may have to order another case by February, as they are still flying off the shelves.
We're located on a college campus and will be selling whole bean coffee for the first time EVER when school starts on Tuesday. It's a unique market, so we'll keep you posted!
