Hi Ginny Wang,

Nat is right. espresso is not Vietnamese coffee habit. Normally, Vietnamese drinks drip filter coffee. In our mind (Vietnamese), coffee is dark and bitterness. it can not drink without sugar. Some people surprise when I drink coffee without sugar. People drinks low quality coffee mixed with soy bean, corn, and others. The higher quality beans are exported. This low quality became their favor and taste. Why do they mixed others with coffee? because Vietnamese refers to drink ice coffee. If they serve ice coffee with 100% pure coffee, it is tasteless like water.

Espresso coffee houses are in big city. for smaller city, the drip-filter coffee is everywhere.

Why reneka is popular in VN? becase reneka is distributed by An Nam (a french - vietnamese company). I hate the name "an nam". France called Vietnam (their colony country) was an nam. One of importance for espresso machine is local service. An nam can provide this. It is funny that their service team does not know anything about espresso.

If possible, pls share with your coffee house management.

Hi, well espresso is the Italian coffee culture, and every country tries to make proper espresso ideally.
When I say low quality, I mean the opposite of quality. GB5 is high quality. Reneka machines (from France) are low quality and make poor extractions. Many cafes use Reneka in Vietnam as they are the cheapest machines. Vietnam grows low quality coffee, and not many good coffee roasters. Therefore tastes not good. Simple as that. Also there is a high tax on imported green and roasted coffee which makes things difficult.

Hi Ginny how are you?

My name is Nat Paolone, I am a Barista Trainer/Manager for an Italian coffee roaster, distributed in Vietnam.. I am from Canada, but learned espresso from living and working in high-quality cafes and a boutique roaster in Australia for 3 years. I am interested in getting to Taiwan. Vietnam I think lacks far behind other Asian countries in quaility espresso because most places use really low-quality Vietnamese beans, poorly roasted, and also low-quality machines. So it is definately a challenge.

I also regularly train in Cambodia and Laos.

Tell me about yourself...?

Nat
