Dan; The Gene Cafe measures air temperature not bean temp. The clear "shield" is just a safety unit, I haven't found any difference in the roast weither it is up or down. I tilt it up so I can get a better view of the beans as they progress through the roasting stages.
I received the unit (bought it from Burman Coffee Traders) about a week before Christmas and have run close to 60 batches so far. For my application, as a home roaster and someone that had zero experience, the Gene Cafe has been great.

Probibly the best spot for coffee in ashland is Evo's, its right on the edge of downtown and a very homey and nice cafe, the coffee isint bad either, i will be back in portland by monday, if ya wanna get a cup somewhere
