Hi. I'm Rocky and I'm a Barista. In addition to that addiction I've run into a problem. I haven't had a job in coffee since last September (2010, who knows how long posts stay up) and it's driving me…Continue

What is your position in the coffee industry?
barista
Where are you located? ( City and Country )
portland, United States
How many years have you been in the industry?
5

maybe
Tell us more about your coffee shop or barista skills.
I started off very green in my grandmothers coffee shop...kiosk at Fort Stevens state park making cups of joe for onsite campers during summer months and oddly enough didn't know what i was doing until one of the local fisherman told me i should try making a good shot of real espresso instead of the never ending stream of 2 dollar rise and shine cups of sugar. A few weeks after that I was spending most of my days trying out espresso made from beans of different local roasters and by the next summer i was cupping my favorite beans with regular camp site guests trying to spread the fever that took hold of me a year before. most people held on to their caramel lattes and whipped cream which is fine but a few others really developed a taste for the traditional drinks that i fell in love with. I spent a couple years like that before deciding to move away from the sleepy coast of Oregon to Portland where I found work at a bookstore making Seattles Best Coffee for about three years, using a semi-automatic machine, which is not at all like the Astoria Argenta I was used to working with. I was still happy in a great setting for coffee though, surrounded by books and spending time with customers explaining fair trade practices.
What cities or countries are you interested in traveling to?
I have various reasons to visit each but here's the break down from cities and states in the US to countries.

United States: New York City, San Francisco, Boston, Chicago, Chaco Canyon in New Mexico, I love the Mojave as well, I grew up in Southern California and my favorite part of the road trips the family would take to Las Vegas was driving through the desert (especially during a dry thunderstorm), New Orleans, Seattle...

Countries :)

New Zealand, Australia, Japan, Austria, Jamaica,Brazil, Chile. I hope I never stop having the urge to travel. The world is too big and I'm too curious.
About Me:
I'm 29 years old and by the time I'm forty I want to have my own coffee shop...I'd like to find the perfect spot in the desert and create an oasis of coffee house culture and then fill it up with art and books.

everything else about me is in the past and it reads to me like a laundry list of good and bad. I grew up in a small city in Southern California called Whittier, Nixon went to school there which isn't that impressive to me, Joe Ranft and John Lasseter grew up in Whittier too and to me that's golden. I spent a lot of years slacking off because that's what my friends were doing and I wanted to fit in. It wasn't until I had spent a good amount of time getting myself into a good amount of debt over some pretty awesome concerts, a miserable car that i loved and some pretty amazing relationships that I realized could have probably created something lasting in the world that made people happy. here i am, 29 in Portland with a happy past and a full-time job but every moment I don't plan for falls into the past and every moment I plan for and spend time preparing for is a future I make. I'm ranting now but it helps me navigate through the day instead of just moving along through it.

I rant, I make Comics, I sell my time to a company to make rent appear, I used to make coffee and I will again.
About My Company:
I have quite a few friends who enjoy my company, and a few people who think it's rather dull because I have a tendency to rant about books and coffee on many occasion.

with some luck and hard work i will have a profitable sustainable company.
What is your favorite thing about the coffee industry?
6am to 10am when veryvery busy people stop everything they do to sit down and enjoy life at a small table with friends and strangers over a cup of coffee or an espresso that i make.
