UK, Costa Rica, France
About Me:
I was a car salesman who got a great deal on a coffeeshop. I will be 57 in March. My partner is also my wife and have been married for 37 years (in March). I have three children and 5 grandchildren. I am an elder at our church. I had to resign my ministerial papers with another denomination in order to effectively work with the youth in our small town of 756 people.
About My Company:
We are a small coffeeshop in Port Deposit. We have been around for a bit over two years. Besides espresso drinks, we also have some groceries, gifts, etc. and have been the only store in town. From about 3:00 to 6:00 each day we are flooded with kids as we have made this the place to come after school. Right now our only espresso machine is a super-automatic Saeco Vienna Deluxe. At the last CoffeeFest, I actually saw what a latte is supposed to look like and have been practicing since. My latte art is non-existant at this time but at least I am getting a latte. At this time, we can't afford the barista schools so any help would be greatly appreciated. By the way, we have 139 original autographs on the walls for customers to enjoy. No they haven't been in the store, I have been collecting them since my mid-teens.
What is your favorite thing about the coffee industry?
The smile on the customer's face when you've "done good".

Ok. If a grand barista were to come into our tiny shop they might walk away with their head shaking. We are not just a coffee shop but we also have the basics in groceries, including toothpaste, eggs, milk, bread and cheese. We also have a couple of video games, a 5 ft Wizard gumball machine, 139 authentic autographs on the walls, Our espresso maker is a Saeko Vienna plus which is a super automatic espresso maker for the home rather than commercial ( it does make good espresso however). We… Continue

Richard; I'm a 'newbie' to Barista Exchange and the coffee industry. I too have spent time in the auto business - leasing, selling and until five years ago owned an AAMCO Transmission franchise. Hands down, the coffee business is much more fun. It sounds like you are "serving" your small community well - you are to be commended, especially for your efforts with the kids. Best of Luck.
