What is your position in the coffee industry?
barista
Where are you located? ( City and Country )
dayton, oh
How many years have you been in the industry?
3
If you are a barista or shop, are you interested in a barista exchange with another coffee shop/barista?
yes
Tell us more about your coffee shop or barista skills.
I work at the espresso bar (e-bar) at pacchia. I started there about three years ago and its my home away from home. Currently, I am working on improving my latte art- sometimes its beautiful but more times than not I struggle. I am continually trying to perfect my milk steaming and shots, uniformity is a difficult task to achieve. I have been reading a lot of articles and books to just expand my knowledge of all things coffee.
What cities or countries are you interested in traveling to?
I haven't been able to travel as much as I'd like to but I want to go pretty much every where. more specifically south american, southern europe, northeast & southeast asia, africa.. . . . . . every where.
About Me:
I am a history major who knits in class and reads her books before the quarter starts. I'm a pregnant barista who allows herself an espresso drink every other day (what to expect says i can!). I am a homebody but I have to be engaged in something or i go stir crazy. I make-up words like "jerk-a-saurus-rex", not to replace cuss words but just because they sound cool. I am addicted to ikea and buy cups for the people I work with there.
About My Company:
espresso bar is a coffee shop attached to a pacchia, a restaurant that is located in the coolest three blocks of dayton, oh - the oregon district. we appeal to a vast array of patrons- from businessmen/women, to artists, to kids from the high school up the street, to local judges. Its an atmosphere were people from many different places in their lives interact with and learn from one another. The baristi at the shop pride themselves on the care and dedication we put into every beverage. We focus on making traditional italian style espresso drinks but are open to making to the trendier drinks as well, because everybody has different tastes. I dunno, it's one of my favorite places so I don't want to brag on it too much!
What is your favorite thing about the coffee industry?
The atmosphere- the interactions that take place everyday between the barista and the customer, the knowledge that we can convey to them and the general eagerness to learn about the drinks being consumed.

Earlier this summer a woman who teaches at a nearby university sent me a book list for a course she teaches on the history of coffee. Just thought I'd pass it along:

Liss, David. The Coffee Trader: A Novel. New York, Ballantine Books, 2005. Pendergrast, Mark. Uncommon Grounds. New York: Basic Books, 1999.

Cycon, Dean. Javatrekker: Dispatches from the World of Fair Trade Coffee. New York: Chelsea Green Publishing, 2007.
