I have been roasting with the Diedrich IR 24N for almost a year. This is the equiptment I was trained on, but my mentor has moved away and I have a question about the smallest amount of beans I can roast. I pretty much always do a full roast of 45lbs each time I roast but I do have some beans that are not a high volume sales and only require a couple to ten pounds. I'm not really sure if I should be roasting such a small amount in a roaster this large or not. I would like some feed back on this if anyone can help that would be great.

I have a 20 pounder. My normal load is 18# and I occaisionally go down to 9, for those slower moving coffees. I open extra outside air, diminish convection, and generally turn the machine into a different roaster. I believe other roasters go down to half load, but under that is very hard to control.

I roast on an Ambex YM-15. Optimal load is 20 lbs., for us anyway. The smallest amount I can roast with any consistency is 5 lbs. I use a MUCH lower charge temp., close down the airflow until first crack and also shorten the roast time while keeping the same profile curve. I have set profiles for 5 lbs. and 22 lbs. and I adjust time, airflow and temperature changes for batch sizes in between 5 and 22 lbs. Hope this isn't too confusing. I'll try to clear it up if it is.
