You know, for as many people as I have trained in my life, I have never been through a training. I was dropped in front of a machine at my first shop, sort of a "learn as you go," with someone talking me through everything over my shoulder. It worked for me at the time, but I didn't have the most solid foundation. Plenty of places around have "barista" training, but who trained those trainers? Now, I'm realizing, perhaps I need a "Training on How to Train," sort of class. Even if I don't need one, I think I would like one, and I don't think there is a chance that I wouldn't at least learn something at the training (I know that my training routine needs more structure). Are these classes out there, first of all, second of all, are there any of them that I'm not going to have to board an airplane to go to (I live in Michigan).

Bry, you've been around this coffee community for long enough, that I would strongly suggest that you have a good long talk with whoever you are looking to do business with to make sure you would actually come out having learned something.

You probably already know that I have a course to train Trainers in coffee establishments. I have had people who have been in coffee for far longer than me express interest, and I am always hesitant to say "yes" right off the bat just for the same reason I gave you in the previous paragraph. I have always put together a questionnaire for them to answer for their benefit. I imagine it can sound odd to be interviewed by someone you are looking to pay money to rather than the other way around, but the last thing I need is for a client to come away dissatisfied with what I have to offer. I have always prided myself on delivering above and beyond expectations, and so far, I have never NOT done that.

What you might do instead of asking like you have, is to find someone in your area who you think you would like to learn from, and approaching them about it. If being in your vicinity isn't such an important factor, then broaden the boundaries.

I know you are a competent barista. You would certainly want to make sure it would be worth your while.

Just some loose change from a trainer.
