Starbucks to Offer Free Wi-Fi at All Stores Nationwide

Starbucks is biting the bullet next month and will begin offering free
Wi-Fi nation wide.  This is no doubt a decision made in response to
McDonald's already offering free Wi-Fi.  In a step to jump ahead of the
crowd they plan on offering  customers free and unrestricted access to
paid sites and services like WSJ.com and other content providers on
their phones, tablets or laptops.

Does this make you any more likely to go into a Starbucks?

Is free wi-fi good for cafes in general?

Do you even care?

Are you willing to trade quality for convenient Wi-Fi?

Nope. Free Wi-fi isn't hard to come by, good coffee is. My solution: home roast coffee and have a few good brewing methods for home use. Use the wifi you already pay for!
With the prevalence of free wifi for the customers of the vast majority of indie shops, I don't see this as being relevant. Less bitching from current Starbucks customers is the extent.

Frankly, if a cafe was counting on its free wifi to keep customers coming back, they were doomed anyway.

We have been offering free wifi for customers since open. It fits what we are trying to do. Generally, that results in at least 25 bucks in extra sales a day, due to a couple of people that use our shop as an office during non-peak hours. They love our coffee and lunch too, and like us lots, so they are not just coming for the wifi.
