Paper towels or electric hand dryer???

Because we are on a little sandbar 420 miles south of Miami everything has to be shipped in and accordingly costs are much higher than mainland.  Recently I saw an invoice for paper towels for automatic dispensers that we have in the bathroom.

600' white paper towels, 8 wide... US they are $83 a case of 12. Here with shipping and duty... it works out to about $10 a roll.

OK, now for a little math... on the average day we use (2) rolls of paper towels and (6) rolls of toilet paper, one container of liquid soap for a combined daily cost of +/- $25...

That's $750 per month... PER LOCATION... amazing to me that an incidental item (easily overlooked) adds up to about $10,000 a year PER LOCATION.

We always leave an extra roll of toilet paper on the back of the toilet and two more under the sink but inevitably the bathroom runs out and then people use paper towels and block up the toilet.

So... here is my question.

Does anybody use hand dryers? Like, dislike? Pros/cons?

Comments on bathroom costs?

With four locations, I am kinda' freaked out that we're spending $40K a year on the crapper...

Shit worth paying for?

Are you using metered dispensers our paper use went way down when we swiched to new dispensers that had a programmable pause time.

We've been looking at hand dryers the issue I'm running into is the new green ones are pretty loud. This thing is really cool
Dyson Airblade
Dyson; First thing I saw in my research, they are $1,800 and quite large...they also have to be mounted low about waist height ... We have long pause and metered ... but we have high foot traffic.

I agree about the noise factor... but wow ... I mean $600 a month just for paper towels...
I've used the Dysons at several locations around town, and they are AWESOME!

Installing those in your cafe will create a buzz. Every place I've been to that has one, people come back and say "DUDE! You've got to go wash your hands! It's crazy." Maybe bathroom buzz isn't what you need, but it gets people excited and talking about your place.
Lorenzo; Love the white LED's on the espresso machine... you guys add those. Neat idea... we have a similar light on the workstations in our internet loft... would love to add something like that to the espresso machines.

Bathroom WOW... yes indeed... I am a fan of bathroom WOW... at home I have Toto NeoRest

Much too fragile for commercial applications... trying to talk myself into the Tyson.

I wonder, should be put teeth around the area where you put your hands in... I mean it is called... A TYSON.
My first thought is that people are steeling your bathroom paper. But even if they are using that much I think a solution is to switch to the "large roll" toilet paper. It lasts forever and its just good enough to get the job done but not nice enough for someone to want to come in just to use the bathroom.

As for the Dyson thing...I hate it. It does not really get the job done and people end up touching the rim of it when they use it. I saw it at a Costco here in Seattle and the guy before me walked from the toilet did a quick rinse with water and then went to dry his hands off in the dryer. No soap + touching the hand dryer = next guy touching poop. Im just not a fan.
Most electric dryers are nor great. The standard one is weak and slow. The "Jet dry" one is deafeningly loud and moves your skin too much when you use it - which really weirds some people out. The Dyson one rocks... only acceptable electric blower choice to me.

A seldom considered aspect of the electric hand dryer is the water mess it will create in your bathroom. I once worked at a company that used no paper towels, and the water mess on the wall and floor was HORRENDOUS. Something to keep in mind.

Good luck.
