So A friend of mine and I recently set out to consolidate everything we know about coffee into one website and try to get people we know more excited about it. That being said, when we got to the part where we wanted to start getting into Home Roasting, we sort of fall short. 

While I am extremely interested in getting started with home roasting, its a pretty overwhelming hobby to get started with. With so many opinions out there on how to effectively get started, I am left sort of in the dark on where to actually begin. For those who are roasting at home, how did you get started?

My budget doesn't exactly permit any good machinery, but I have been reading through on Sweet Maria's guides on home roasting, and they seem pretty complete in the information there. 

I want to use my experience with getting started as something to show how easy it can be to get involved with home roasting, but am not really sure where to start, anyone have any good tips from when they got started?

The first step of any Journey is the hardest. Just do it. Just pick a method you can afford and start. Analysis paralysis will get you nowhere.

 

Have you joined Sweet Maria's email chat list and asked? (The answer is no, I know since I've been a member over a decade and receive email of every post)

Sounds like you're putting the cart before the horse... How can you teach and demonstrate what you don't know or do? There are numerous resources out there already for anybody really interested in home roasting.

 

It's easy to turn beans brown, it's a lifetime Journey learning to make beans sing.

Definitely agree on my ability to teach the home roasting. I probably worded that poorly.

I just wanted to show the trial and error that is inevitable with starting anything this complex. I am fairly new to the forum world, so I will definitely be joining up there for that information. 

The idea is to put my learning curve on display, kind of an electronic journal of me getting started; to show people it doesn't have to be too intimidating. 

I will definitely be checking out the forums at Sweet Maria's. I was only reading through their online instructions for home roasting basics. 

How did you actually get started Mike? What sort of roaster did you use? How long were you at it before you felt the roast was to your liking? What sort of beans did you start with?
