Does anyone have any experience with gift or loyalty cards outside of the standard card form? What about gift or loyalty cards tied to mugs or other merchandise customers carry?

I'll bet Mugs would be good, you could just have a bar code printed on each and activate them the same as a gift or loyalty card. Bar code scanners are cheap and can easily be added to most POS systems.

Excellent idea. True "out of the box" thinking.

The only issue is that this would require a "unique" bar code to be printed on every mug to track value if it was being used in place of a gift card.

Great idea though...

So we're using RFID tags to give each mug a unique account number, customers just wave the mugs past a reader. Tags are pretty cheap and don't add too much to the total cost of the mug. Shops need to purchase an RFID reader for each POS but readers are affordable at $40.
