A few years ago, our shop acquired a Swift grinder for very little money. We're pretty high volume, so it's nice sometimes. The shots from the swift just have never compared to the Super Jolley's we keep on hand for backup and single origin espresso. The swift grinder is nice because all of our baristas are not of the same skill level. I train everyone, however, on the Mazzer's way before they are even allowed to touch the swift grinder. I think this helps them understand what they are doing more. Anyways, the Swift Grinder went down and everybody has been handling the longest of lines with two Super Jolley's just fine. I've convinced the owner it's a better idea to refurbish the swift and sell it off, replacing it with an electronic Mazzer Major or doserless Compak K10. What are your thoughts on this? I've also had trouble locating a dealer who sells the doserless Compak K10.

There's a distributor on the right coast. info@compakgrinders.com. The grinders look solid. They have a new one coming out in 2011. I believe it's called the K-10 evolution, It's doserless, on demand with a switch activated by the portafilter, and conical. Although I haven't really seen any press on it. Seems like something I wouldn't keep a secret.
Another shop in town has a doserless k10. I really like the idea of having a switch activated by the Portafilter. I've seen the current doserless K10 go for around $1,800. Which is a way better value than the equivalent conical electronic dosing Mazzer's. Distributers for them just seem to be few and far in between.

I've been using my Compak K10 Timer/Doserless for one year now and I'm very pleased with it. I like having the start button away from the portafilter because you can also use it as a pause button. I'm not sure that that would work if it was set up like an Azkoyen.
How much for your swift....? Or 3 super Jollys or a Macap 7a Evolution for trade?
i'm not a fan of the doserless (it's so messy), but i LOVE the k10 WBC. just a great, great grinder.
You've mentioned that before Jared. What's yours like: does the portafilter trip the switch or do you push a button? On mine you push a button with one hand while you hold the portafilter with the other. There's no spillage.
I know they have made various different models.
We're pretty high volume and tend to have multiple people on bar throughout the shift, so in order to ensure consistency I think doserless is favorable. There are a few times when I've come into work and have had the counter around the grinders covered with coffee. Sloppy, yes. But it happens. The doserless K10 has to be an improvement over an overwhelmed barista using a Super Jolley.

Wow, that bar is set pretty low. I think an exploding shopvac would be cleaner than an overwhelmed barista using a Super Jolly.
Valid point, haha
