Price point?
"low end decent performing espresso machine" <-non existent.
POD option<- I would seriously advise you to re-consider this "feature".

For what it's worth I would say the first real machine for home use to consider would be the oh so famous rancilio silvia. You will need a quality espresso grinder too. It's a lot of money up front for whats kind of a hobby for a lot of people, but it totally makes you happy with coffee and is vastly better than sbux. Better than a quality coffee house? that takes roughly 2k.

I'm well aware of concept.. "you get what you pay for".. makes perfect sense , yet - are we all driving Beemers and Rolls Royces ? *wink*
as for POD idea.. few yrs back I was visiting Europe and cup of espresso from ( can't recall brand of machine) ILLY POD was absolutely satisfying ( call it personal taste)..
All in All .. I guess what I'm trying here is "duplicate" that experience. :)

Gaggia domestic line.

They have pod adapters, and they all pretty much perform the same, and the cheapest one is around $200US.

Throw in another two or three hundred for a capable grinder, and you've got a decent little home setup capable of real espresso all for less than the price of a "low end" heat exchanger.
