To celebrate the world of barista competitions and just how incredible and creative our little, big world can be I am proposing 51 weeks, 51 beverages or 51:51. This is to bring our customer base at local cafes closer to the world of specialty coffee. It will take a lot of planning but my goal is to prepare and celebrate a menu of beverages that spans the 2009 WBC. Whenever possible it would be great to feature a new country every week throughout the year but when it is not possible we will celebrate past wbc champ beverages, usa champ beverages or regional champ beverages. We talk a lot with customers about the importance of this competition and that while it is still a niche within the niche of specialty coffee, it is still a very powerful voice in the chain of how we come to that "ideal cup of coffee". I think for this to work properly, there will have to be a schedule at least 20 recipes deep so ingredients and practice can happen. Of course, no one will prepare a beverage without consent from participating competitors. We will probably feature it as a happy hour beverage from lets say 2-4pm Monday-Saturday at both The CEL & Moka's cafe. (Moka's is a cafe owned by Pat & Dawn Loraas who also own Visions where the CEL is being built.) We will really need fantastic details on the recipe along with enough lead time to order the right coffees, based on the date we will feature the beverage. Any body else want to do this or have pointers?

sounds awesome! also sounds challenging, good luck!
i think the crux of any sig drink is its mimicking of the coffee in the ingredients used.... i imagine that, if this is your ethos, you are going to be going through all sorts of different coffees all year...
I think that's a great idea Sarah! I'd be willing to implement that at our bar. Will you be compiling the recipes? Perhaps we can find a way to unify shops around the world under this 51:51 program and have everyone follow the same drink schedule?

Maybe a fall 2009 start date?
