Event Description

We're getting ready for our first ever brew competition and I realize many people have never competed in this type of competition before! A lot of baristas are gearing up for the latte art competition but not many realize the BIG PRIZES are reserved for the brewing competition!! This an important step forward many cafes are taking recently in serving single cup brewing methods so we really wanted to highlight it during the festivities this year.

Come to our Brew Competition run thru & calibration this Monday 25th at 6pm at our Roastery on 310 East Pike. You'll get a first look at the setup and how the competition will flow as well as be able to mess around with some of the brewing methods.

Also check out the sweet prizes from Espresso Parts!

1st Place wins Karma Brewer Station, 2 Hario V60 Drippers, filters, & a scale!
2nd Place wins Hario Dripper & Filters, & hand grinder!
3rd Place wins a Chemex brewer, filters, scale & hand grinder!

Talk about some sweet setups!

A little about the main event (You can find more info under my Victrola BREW HA HA event post as well):

So what do you need to do to prepare? Well actually, YOU DON'T NEED TO BRING A THING! All brewing equipment will be provided by Espresso Parts Northwest and La Marzocco USA! Everyone will be brewing the same coffee which will be provided by Victrola. Just show up with your mad brewing skills! Of course if you have your favorite you can bring it to brew with!! The day of the competition, you will have time to do a test run of your brew on our equipment before going into the competition.

Here's how the brewing competition will work:
---------------------------------------
1st Round: Elimination by Hario V60>>

This will be a head to head elimination round using Hario v60s only to brew. Each competitor will do 2 Hario pour overs of the same coffee using their own grind setting, dosage, pouring technique, etc.
They will be served to three blind judges who will taste the coffee and give a thumbs up or thumbs down based on grading four categories: Best Representation of the Coffee/Overall Taste, Body, Acidity, and Sweetness.

Winning competitor moves on to finals. (We may need to do multiple elimination rounds depending on how many competitors we get!)

Finals Round: Barista's Choice'>>

Each competitor will choose the brew method they feel will best showcase the flavor of the coffee. They'll be able to choose from Hario V60, French Press, Vacuum Pot, Chemex, Aeropress, and Clever Dripper. We will have butane burners for the Vac Pots, scales, thermometers, and a variety of filters. as well as the new Kone metal filter developed by Keith Gehrke of Coava Coffee Roasters for pour-overs. If you have q's about specific supplies let me know!

Judges will tally a score based on the tasting categories listed above and top score wins the competition!

The main competition is during our BREW HA HA Saturday Oct 30th at Victrola Coffee Roasters - 310 East Pike Street. Sign ups start at 7pm!
