Way back in 2009 we started thinking about opening a really comfy & inviting coffee house that would have cool music playing in the background, local art hanging on the walls, a nice big bookcase full of books and most importantly a place that made good coffee (ok, damn good coffee). After moving to downtown Toronto and visiting some great independent's we spent the better part of a year sampling coffee and picking up tips from some of TO's renowned coffee houses.

Eventually it was time to put up or shut up so we quit our jobs (yikes!), took our savings (yikes!), purchased a brand new Elektra 60's espresso machine and put together an eclectic mix of furniture, chandeliers, art and books and went looking for a neighbourhood to call home. We eventually took out a lease on an empty locksmith shop right across the street from a Second Cup and a block away from a Starbucks. To be fair we could have opened in a farmer's field and there would be a Starbucks half a cornfield away.

We've got local artists displaying their works on the walls (and we've even sold a few) and local musicians performing on our stage most weekends. We've hosted book launches, art shows, private concerts, private functions including World of Warcraft and Friend's of Classical Music MeetUp's (not at the same time).  Local poets and author's are encouraged to have readings at The Mad Bean and book clubs are more than welcome to use The Mad Bean to meet.

We love the vibe of coffeehouses with their eclectic mix of people, the uplifting aroma of fresh coffee beans and comfortable surroundings, but in the end The Mad Bean is always about the drinks. From freshly roasted fair-trade coffees to the finest imported espresso beans, we create every drink with love and attention. If your particular concoction isn't the way you think it should be we'll happily redo it for you - unless you want that big fluffy airy-foam on your latte that's where we draw the line, sorry.

The Mad Bean has become a favourite neighbourhood hangout for coffee connoisseurs looking for an alternative to the big coffee chains by offering free wireless Internet, awesome pastries delivered fresh every morning, and those wonderful beans roasted weekly by Reunion Island and Velvet Sunrise. Our coffee is organic, fair trade, direct trade and most importantly delicious.
