From September 1-4, 2008, Coffee Kids’ program staff attended Ramacafé 2008 in Manauga, Nicaragua. More than 300 participants from 16 countries (mostly from Central America) attended the event.

Since 2004, Ramacafé has gathered scholars, producers, roasters, specialists, cooperatives and organizations involved in the coffee industry and coffee culture to share and discuss the future of the industry. This year, José Luis Zárate, Coffee Kids’ international program director,…

What a great way start a Monday. When I arrived last Monday, I had a message of good news and glad tidings from Sarah Allen at
Barista Magazine.

This past weekend (Sept. 12-14) Hiroshi Sawada, owner of
Caffe Milk Art in Japan, competed in the Millrock Latte Art Championship and took first prize in one of the most…

I figured, I would write my thoughts on making money in the coffee industry. I have worked for several coffee shops, I have also worked my own coffee concession. I roast beans by pan, yes it's work, but it's also fulfilling, however the question is am I making money? Well honestly I would have to say no, why because although I work for myself I'm glued to the bean, and with that I can't go out and enjoy the coffee scene the way I would like to. Now knowing what I want to do, it's a matter of…

I recently had my hopes for joining in a barista competition dashed. In talking things over with the owner of the shop I work at, I've come to realize that I will have to either do some major fund-raising/sponsor-begging, or sit out yet another year. And due to the energy that the former will require, I'm leaning towards sitting out.
I'm not happy about giving that up, but with my life going in so many directions at once, I am content to keep my coffee world as calm as possible for…

Jakarta is a city of noise, a cacophony of noise. From the moment you arrive in the city, whether it is by airplane, train or bus, the new arrival steps into a warm, humid bath of sound. The noise is mostly man made, motorbikes, trucks, cars, horns, sirens, bells. It is a place not for those who like peace and quiet.
Rural Indonesia is quite the opposite- a mixture of man made and nature’s sounds gently rolled into a smooth,…

This has been a tough time for everyone, Gas lines, Grocery Lines, no coffee, what no coffee, well here at Hopson Coffee we were prepared and roasted 100 pounds on Sunday after the storm. I have several generators, (I sell them with electrical services with my other full time business), so we fired up the roaster and made brown beans. I was really well prepared for this as my family had a 100lbs of beans and rice, along with a stocked walk in pantry, plenty of water, even a well we can drink…

Local “Coffee Cultures” and the Global Coffee Market
Joe Marino
Illinois State University
2008
-Abstract-
The tastes and preferences of coffee consumers in the United States affect the livelihoods of coffee producers in places such as Central America, East Africa, and Southeast Asia. In this paper I examine the attempts of a coffee shop owner in Central Illinois to create a “coffee culture” in which his clientele learn to appreciate the different qualities…

Hey all,
I haven't been on here in MONTHS! tut-tut, how lapse of me. Anyhoo, while I catch up on all the gossip for you merry bunch I thought I'd post you all an update.
My uni project is developing slowly but surely in that I'm just about to start my second year. It has come round sooooo quickly, it's unnerving. For the past year, I've been reading solidly about Coffee, and Waste and Quality, and coffee shop culture, and the effects of caffeine on the brain, and the economics of…

I actually had to wear a sweater today. Course I'll have to take it off in an hour as it is supposed to be 76 today. But I can feel the nip in the air coming. Soon the layers will come out and we can finally wear jackets again. No more 100 degree weeks. Lusting for hot coffee rather than sipping it. Oh my I love winter and Fall.

Slow Food Nation. How can something called Slow go by so fast? It was a whirlwind of frenetic activity and coffee magic. I keep realizing how historic the event was in every way. It was a monumental undertaking and was amazingly well executed. A huge bow down with high fives to the curators Andrew Barnett, Eileen Hassi and Tonx.
It was truly historic and groundbreaking. But it was also exactly the way all of us have been doing great coffee for years. The Coffee pavillion was not so…

The last thing i did in Southern California was beat Heather Perry in the Ultimate Barista Challenge in Los Angeles. I feel pretty good about doing that. Somebody had to..
so, i made it up to the NW for good (for now, at least). After spending nearly a month on the road, i'm still adjusting to not living out of a bag, a Eurovan, etc. My friend Kris, along with several other characters, had a great time traveling from Orange County to Seattle and back-- including lava tubes, Oregon…

You motherfuckers. Last person to fuck with Benza isn't back on solid food yet.
You've been warned.

Just want to say thanks to everyone that stopped by at Coffee Fest this weekend. It was great to see some new people and put faces to names with some existing ones!
Our online ordering seemed to go over well and we got a lot of feedback from attendees! I wound up running the Ipod battery down each day of the show by doing online ordering through it!

Pizza & Coffee
Just came from work, unexpected early but a pleasant surprise.
Knowing that my meal is half ready and looking forward to a nice full creamy and smooth espresso....a must after heavily abusing my body poring black acid through my organs from one commercial coffee brand which I do not wish to mention.
Opened up the front door, lights on and strait to my kitchen. My kitchen is base, the place I wish to be after a…
