@Kyla. I've had a successful coffee shop for almost 9 years. The CC processing fees are a real challenge. A few years ago I started requiring a minimum purchase of $5.00 to use a credit card. That is getting more and more common. Either the customer will dig and find their cash, they will add another item to their purchase to hit $5.00, or they can buy and/or reload their gift card for $5.00. Either the customer will dig and find their cash, they will add another item to their purchase to hit $5.00, or they can buy and/or reload their gift card for $5.00. I am in the process of switching my credit card processing to my bank. They have brick and mortar right near me, I have a checking account and one or more loans with them so they are not trying to make all their money off me just in credit card processing fees. It took me awhile to catch on, but so many credit card processing salespeople convince you that your current processing company is ripping you off and they are going to rescue you from being ripped off. It does not turn out to be true, but they get you switched over then you are tied to them unless you pay a ridiculously high early termination fee.

I'm also in the process of researching Ipad POS systems. Have you gotten one installed by now, and how do you like it?
Joe in NYC and Smallpoint in…tag:www.baristaexchange.com,2012-07-19:1688216:Comment:13987332012-07-19T02:16:18.362Zvictoria fallonhttps://www.baristaexchange.com/profile/victoriafallon

But,

this CC processing is really new to me. I am just starting out and have been researching different companies. The rates are astronomical (in my opinion)

Please can someone chime in and tell me if this is normal (or if my math is off)

Here's an example:

CC processing company 1.55% + .14cents per transaction.

I estimate that each transaction will be $5.

I estimate I will have about 200 transaction per day.

So... 5 x .0155 = 0775 + .14 = about .22 cents per transation

.22 cent x 200 = $44/day

$44/day x 6days/week =$264/week

$264/week x 4weeks = $1056/month!!!

$1056/month in transaction fees!!!!

Please tell me if this is a normal rate or can I do much better!

Thanks :-)

Another one to check out is Salesvu.com. Free app, and lower rates than Square. Has the same limitations as you've mentioned for a drive thru and kitchen printers. From what I have been told they are working on the printer issue to be able to have customers in a drive thru sign a receipt and not the screen itself. I wish Square would do the same. I'm still a bit cautious with using Square, as they are still not completely PCI compliant(at least not that I have seen) which has enormous fines…

Your system looks pretty decent. Most of the solutions look too complicated for our kind of operation. I have a few questions:

Does it also do a kitchen (or better said, a espresso machine) display screen that the barista can tick off finished items?

Will it work without internet connection?

You can probably do better, but any provider is going to require estimated transaction volume before you get real rates. Things to consider are your volume, average transaction amount and monthly fees. $.10 a transaction is standard,(it varies a little) and if your average sale is a low dollar amount, expect fees to be higher. The companies doing the processing adjust to make it profittable for them. I can offer advice on this if you'd like. Lazy day today... email (chris (at) the three it goes…
