Checked out Mugs a couple times over the past few days as I headed Uptown. Nice location and espresso was good 2 out of 3 times so far. They had two coffees available when I picked some whole beans, mocha java blend and their house blend which the barista stated was a darker roast. Don't think CC offers a dark roast, unless they do it on request. Possibly it is a lower acidity and heavier bodied coffee, and he just uses the term Dark Roast to please the Charbucks folks. One thing that got me, the espresso was automatically served in a 12 oz to go cup. ????? Why in the world would you do that?
Outstanding!
Outstanding! Looking forward to seeing you down here.

Glad you enjoyed your visit to the shop. Honestly, I was a little worried about how your espresso was going to be. We're in that time of year where espresso demand is ramping up quickly, and it seems like we're frequently using it a couple of days earlier than we'd prefer. Makes things interesting... Thanks for the compliment!

That's a great cafe you have going on over there at Coffee Garden. Good espresso and also a quality job on the buildout of the place. Charlotte has really grown on me over these past two visits and have decided to move down here next month from Pittsburgh.

The "promising newcomer" is Mugs... also a Counter Culture shop. Again, haven't been (still?).

Sorry to hear that your espresso experience was disappointing here in CLT. We'll have to work on that!

PS... won't be on bar tomorrow am, heading west to fix stuff. Not so many bar shifts these days :(. Hope you enjoy your experience if you stop in though.

I ended up going to Dillworth on East Blvd and Central Coffee...unfortunately the espresso at both places was on par with starbucks. I really wanted to head down to the garden but just ran out of time, I'll definitely stop by next time I'm up there.

Just came down to Charlotte to visit a good friend and take CCC's Intermediate Espresso Lab. Will be sure to stop in the Coffee Garden tomorrow AM when I head out to Durham/Raleigh for two days.

Not Just Coffee closed shop and are relocating to a new location. Visited Central Cofee and had an unpleasant and bitter shot. What is the newcomer that you speak of?

Coffee in Charlotte has changed quite a bit in the past year. The two I recommended earlier are still good options, as is the Coffee Garden. Add to that list Not Just Coffee (Counter Culture) at 15th and Davidson streets, not too far from Hwy 277. You should also consider Cast Iron Waffles, a Cultiva customer, if you are on the far south side. There's another promising newcomer that I haven't visited yet, but I'll let you know after I stop by.

Waking Life Espresso in Asheville is definitely worth a stop, and the espresso program at The Dripolator Coffeebar is very solid.

I personally think the brewed coffee scene in Black Mountain is much better than it is in Asheville. It's a town of only 8,000 about 20 minutes east of Asheville. There are two local roasters, The Dripolator Coffeehouse and Dynamite Coffee Roasters, both source good coffees seasonal lots and spend a lot of time getting the roasts right. Both shops have…

Both shops have manual brewing programs and nice outdoor seating.

Black Mountain is also home to the most respected brewery in the area, Pisgah Brewing Company, They have sweet taproom and lots of outdoor seating.
