Duct tape to the rescue! Yes, here's another use for the mighty material. I wrapped the broken spring with duct tape - inside and out as securely as possible - and reinserted it. Dang if it didn't work!!!

I can now order a spring without spending $75 for overnight shipping, in the event that I cannot find one locally which is doubtful.

Stock item for any Bunn parts house that'd be willing to sell it to you. Couple of bucks tops. Definitely replace the silicone cup while your in there if you can get a new one - the little pocket that the stem pops into tends to tear out after a while. I always replace both.

Thanks Brady. It is the spring. It does not look like a standard kind of spring, but I'll see what I can find.

Brady said:

You can buy the spring and silicone seat cup lots of places. Just drain the water down so that no more comes out, unscrew the cap assembly (channel locks on the chrome cap), disassemble (push out the roll pin in the handle), and replace for about $5 in parts. OR if the handle's a little beat up and the pin falling out (or you're feeling less brave and/or lazy) you can just the handle and cap as a complete assembly and replace the whole thing.

Do not take it apart until you have the new parts, and get them quickly. The situation will deteriorate very rapidly.

Good luck.
