It is still "the preferred" method of prepping coffee in Singapore and Malaysia. There is a variation on the theme in Aceh (North Sumatra). The rest of Indonesia has yet other ways of making coffee. I think its the variety that makes it so interesting.

Alun... so very interesting. The recirculated brew, back through the filter a few times, reminds me of "twice roasted duck", or "3 times fried rice", etc. (it's an Asian thing I guess?) I'm reminded, as Rich P. said below, that there are no "perfect" brewing methods. While I full well know the "after roast" life of a bean, I still love my Brasilian cafezinho, which is brewed from retail vacuum paks that are, by a purist's definition, stale as heck. But we love it just the same, and culturally, it is part of the definition of "the aroma of Brasil in the morning." Saw this video and decided that I should pull out the videos from my last coffee visit to Sul de Minas, and post a few more items. Stay dry.

I like the idea that there is no "perfect" method of making coffee! Each area of the world makes a coffee drink to be savored and enjoyed. When I get a chance I have a coffee at whatever "ethnic" restaurant I am lucky enough to find myself in.
Thanks for the videos!

Filmed at Kafie Dian in Beach Road, Singapore. Many, many Kopitaims use this method to prepare coffee in Singapore and Malaysia. I remember the first time I saw this was in 1998 in Penang. There they wok roasted the coffee with margarine before preparing the coffee
