As some may know, the Wisconsin legislature is currently dealing with the governor's budget proposal that includes a whole bunch of items that really have no business being included in the budget, including a proposed state-wide smoking ban. I write a bi-weekly coffee column for the local paper and a couple weeks ago addressed this smoking ban issue in a column about coffee, cigars and exemptions to the proposed ban (cigar bars and lounges). It was published on the editorial page in our local paper along with at least a couple of other city papers in Wisconsin, as well as on the Cigar Rights of America site and tobacco.org. Got some positive feedback from our State Representatives and Senator, which I appreciated.

Just FYI, if anyone cares to read this little editorial you can access it here on one of our blogs (http://stumptoons.blogspot.com/2009/04/coffee-and-cigars.html), along with a nasty though funny phone call I got from an irate anti-tobacco woman. I'd forward you to one of the newspaper-published versions but those seem to get archived and become inaccessible after a few weeks.

If any fellow cigar lovers are dealing with similar state and/or city bans where you live, I would not be at all disinclined to submit this essay to your local paper as well (with perhaps a small change or two to make it more locale-specific). It's just one more voice added to the battle I suppose.

last night I had a Nub Habano and was very impressed. I wished I was sipping a Brazilian we have at our shop - because we don't serve a SO Nicaraguan (which would have been fun to pair with the Nicaraguan tobacco).

Today I shall be starting my first holiday since opening our roastery/espresso bar 2 years ago. The cigar of choice is a maduro partagas select. The brew is going to be a french press of our guatemalan finca vista hermosa. The trip will be hitting all of the third-wave nerd cafes of western Canada. (victoria/vancouver) If this is your neighborhood please let me know I totally want to hit coffee bars of good taste.
Cheers,
Andrew
