Johni... got your info. Very interesting, and I figured you had been here awhile. We have cafezinho every morning, with either fresh hosca or pao de queijo, biscoito, etc. My wife and her Aunts all bake, and depending on who baked last, they split the goodies. Usually my wife drives over to her Aunt's house and they spend the day, Brasilian style, baking and "fofocando-ing" (smile). Ironically, Arlete leaves for Brasilia tomorrow morning. I was going to go, but can't. We have immediate family from Brasilia to Uberlandia, and she usually picks up coffee and cheese when she's in and around Uberlandia. I really wanted to go, but will have to wait until after the holidays. I'm going to do a video on making Brasilian cafe' on an typical US stove. I'll keep you posted. We don't use rocks or make it in the backyard...... but we do use our traditional cotton sock filter.

Al, my dad used to Drink cafe Uniao at home, made with the cloth filter, lots of sugar. In the last few years he has been bringing back Pilao and I have indeed liked it better. Have not tried Tropeiro style brewing, but I have heard a lot about it. Do you guys throw in hot coals or a hot rock into the mix?
Cafe Ouro Negro is indeed grown in Araguari in Minas. They say that their coffee is one of the best in Brazil. I still have not tried it.

Maybe 15 years ago, Cafe' do Ponto was for us, the best imported Brasilian cafe'. But then, maybe 4 years ago, we notice the coffee was much weaker, brewing it the same way we always had. On a coffee trip a couple years ago, I met a representative of the retail corporation for Cafe' do Ponto at the Extra store in Brasilia. He told me that yes, they did change their roasting profile and/or their blend. I told him that now, the coffee tasted more like Cha-fe' not Cafe'. He agreed. Since then, we have found that Pilao brand is the brand that yields a richer morning and afternoon cafezinho. We've tried all the imported vacuum paks, but only use Pilao. Have you experienced the same? We like our coffees strong, and brew tropiero style "with" sugar added to our water pot. By the way, the absolute best retail Brasilian cafe' we can get in Brasil is around Araguari, at a supermercado in the center of town. It is so much fresher and richer in flavor. The brands include "Oro Negro." I'm guessing it comes from local fazendas and processors?

Well the potential volume discount is only part of the equation but in fact that aspect of the "theory" is indeed unproven in my experience. Offering choice is certainly a competitive advantage in mature markets like San Francisco, Portland, and Sea…
